Arrival

Broken Palace by Jonathan Eng
0:07 / 1:13
▶︎
During 2014 Jonathan Eng composed the soundtrack for interactive narrative experience The Sailor’s Dream, consisting of a mix of instrumental tracks and a seven-part musical story told in folk song-form.

Like all who come through summoning circle, your arrival is heralded by a dream. Waking up is a dizzying, disorienting thing... and possibly made worse by the fact that you aren't alone.

Right after you appear, so does someone else. If you're lucky*, they'll simply blink into existence by your side. If you're not, there's a chance they spawned below or above you. That's one way to make a memorable first impression. Best untangle yourselves and get things figured out.

If you're extremely unlucky*, instead of another person being brought through the summoning circle, it's a monster. The creature bobs, laughs maniacally, and immediately begins to spit flames your way.

Some welcome this is. If you aren't the fighting type, hopefully someone nearby is. Eventually, one of the local Town guards will slay the monster before it - and you - cause too much trouble or fire damage.

Town Tricks
ALT TEXT
After your unexpected introduction to either your fellow offworlder or monster, you'll be given a proper one from Charlie in Town. He sends you on your way shortly after to get settled in properly and deal with then next offworlder that walks in. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a revolving door right now so he doesn't have time for a more in-depth explanation or to answer too many questions.

Nor does he remember to warn you about The Fae.

Although native to Talahee Forest, which is currently off-limits to offworlders, the surge of magic from the summoning circle has piqued their interest. While the faefolk vary wildly in appearance, the ones scouting are pixies.

These tiny tricksters may be too shy to reveal themselves outright... but that won't stop them from playing pranks on all these fun, new victims. Some examples of what can happen are:

⁂ Your shoestrings are suddenly tied together and make you trip.
⁂ An object you had on your person goes missing... only to be found in an odd place. Repeatedly.
⁂ Create illusions of food and drink that disappear or turn into something else as soon as you try to consume it.
At night, they'll use dancing lights to lead people astray and turn them around Town.

Thankfully, these Fae mean you no harm. In fact, if you react with hostility they will give you a wide berth and simply find someone more fun to play with.

One of the things that was given to you in your welcome pack from Charlie was a summoning-stone. Although it looks like, well, an ordinary stone- It's actually magic! You can look through it and see someone else's face too if you're both viewing your stones at the same time. It can also record your speech and deliver that to someone else in a snap.

One of the other features is that you can scrawl on it. It will turn your writing into legible text that you can send others to read on their stones. Of course, you need to attune yourself to your stone first. To that end, it prompts a small questionnaire:

    Name:
    Age:
    Race:
    Favorite soup? Why?:
Is soup something you eat or drink?

The last couple of questions might seem... strange but, surely, it must have a reason for asking. Once you answer the questions and unlock your device, you might pocket it and forget. Unfortunately, your scrawled answers were sent to the entire summoning-stone network throughout Town. Everyone can see what you put and they might even have some thoughts about it.

Registration Questionnaire
Notes
⁂ Hello and welcome to Children of Bahamut! If you have any questions, suggestions, or feedback feel free to comment here!

⁂ For the Arrival prompt, feel free to roll a d20 to see how lucky or unlucky you are.

⁂ The Town Tricks example list for pranks isn't exhaustive. If you have other silly prank ideas in mind, feel free to roll with that and have fun with it! The Fae certainly are.

⁂ There is a correct choice of favorite soup and the moderators will remember your choice/opinions. (We're joking. Mostly.)

Sephiroth | Final Fantasy VII (OG) | CRAU (Amani) | OTA

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-22 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
  Fallen Angels (Closed to Angeal)

The dream is...strange. Unsettling, certainly. Sephiroth has fought dragons before, but to be unable to move or defend himself when one is coming directly at him is a bit alarming, even for someone like him. (More, admittedly, for the loss of control over his own body than out of any fear. Experience has shown enough times that he's effectively immortal, and, well...technically, within the simulation, they're all supposed to be dead anyway, aren't they? Though how that works, especially in the context of himself, he's never been quite clear on.)

But the dragon doesn't attack him. Instead, it seems to...merge with him? Which is, honestly, not even on the top ten list of the strangest things that have ever happened to him even in waking life, so when it begins to dissipate into the shreds of a dream, it hardly even registers as something worth remembering. It was, after all, just a dream.

Although no dream could explain why he's waking up outside, and not within the confines of their familiar villa. Or why, before he's even fully sat up to get his bearings, an entire Angeal lands on top of him.

This prompts an undignified noise that he will never admit to later.

But the sound is quickly followed by...some private bewilderment. Angeal's landing on him...hurt? More than it feels like it should have. And the ache persists. That's...new. Uncomfortably new.

"Angeal?"

  Town Tricks

In the name of searching for Genesis - and any of the others they might be able to find - Angeal and Sephiroth have split up within the town. It's a bit disconcerting to do so; Sephiroth's ability to sense the others through their Jenova connections feels distinctly muted here, and - equally distressing - their DTFs seem to be inert. His earring seems to be entirely unresponsive, and without Levi's help, there doesn't seem to be any way to communicate with Angeal over long distances. (If Sephiroth and Angeal had talked to Charlie first rather than stressing out about Genesis, this wouldn't be as much of a concern, but this is the price they pay.) If he needs to find Angeal again quickly...he doesn't have an easy way to do so.

Especially with their wings, and most of their other usual abilities, somehow no longer working. That whole mess...Sephiroth hasn't even fully wrapped his mind around it yet. In fact, searching for Genesis is almost a welcome distraction from having to try to consider all the far-reaching implications of that, no matter how worried they are.

But for all his inner turmoil...Sephiroth, as always, lets very little of it show externally. So while the person who approaches you might just be the most distinctive-looking man alive(??), he at least appears very level-headed and composed. Whether this is reassuring or disconcerting under the circumstances probably depends on your point of view.

"Excuse me - have you seen a tall, red-headed man in a red coat? He's extremely distinctive." Flamboyant, is the word Sephiroth thinks and doesn't say, still accustomed to having to be cautious of Genesis' enhanced hearing. "You'd know him if you'd seen him."

Favorite soup? Why?: Gumbo. Is gumbo a soup? My partner Angeal makes incredible gumbo. He once hijacked a formal function with it.
Is soup something you eat or drink? It depends on the soup. Some broths and purees can be drunk. Soups with many additional ingredients and stews are eaten. I have decided that stews are soup for the purposes of this question.

Town Tricks- and a confrontation

[personal profile] relativefugue 2024-09-23 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Right. So this has been a normal one.

First, Cloud is in some kind of weird dream with a dragon. Nothing too wild, as he frequently is plagued by nightmares that make absolutely no sense, things way, way scarier than whatever the hell that was.

Then, he's awake (or perhaps dreaming deeper) in some backwater town. It sort of reminds him of home in a way. That would be fully fine, except for a glimpse of a certain someone that he catches, and the pull he feels towards him therein. Silver hair, tall, wearing black- absolutely unmistakable. He makes the blond's heart stop in his chest, and ice run through his veins. This is not the usual nightmare replay of his home burning to ash, but it is a close enough facsimile (minus the fire....For now.) that Cloud snaps to action. Just as he always does, trying to stop things and failing every single time.

"Sephiroth!!!!"

It is not a greeting, moreso a roar, as Cloud reaches back to lift the Buster Sword from upon his back and run at his mortal foe. Strangely, the blade feels far heavier in his hands than it ever has before. He's still able to wield it, but not anywhere near as deftly as the usual. Furthermore, his body feels sluggish, unable to run at anywhere near the pace he is hoping for to get the jump on the other SOLDIER. It is only the adrenaline and heightened emotions that allow him to close the distance swinging.

It will not last long. Not with his body betraying him like this. But for now Cloud hauls the Buster Sword in a slashing arc from the ground upwards, directly at the most powerful SOLDIER of all time, and his worst nightmare.

Ah.

What a wonderful time for his past to catch up to him.

Sephiroth knows that voice intimately - for all that they'd honestly had very little contact in his sane life, when Sephiroth was still alive and actually himself and not simply a repurposed husk for Jenova, Cloud's voice has nonetheless become so very, very familiar. So much time after his death, tangled in Cloud's head as Jenova puppeted him to its own ends. So many times, looking out of eyes that were only nominally his anymore, watching atrocities perpetrated by hands that were only by loose definition still his hands, a puppet still dancing on strings fighting one who'd managed to cut his own. Both of them vessels for Jenova, even if Hojo had only imperfectly mapped his work with Sephiroth onto Cloud. Both of them ultimately victims of the same men, the same virus.

With difficulty, Sephiroth has come to accept that to some degree. Has tried to separate himself - with help from others who know who he is as a person, who he'd always tried to be when he was the one able to do the choosing - from the genocidal alien virus that had stepped in and taken control of its perfect vessel from the moment his mind finally broke, when there was no longer a whole and cognizant personality left to keep it out of the pilot's seat of his body. But even having come to accept that for himself at least on good days, he's never once kidded himself as to whether most other people could ever, will ever accept that distinction.

Especially not Cloud. Why would Cloud, of all people, see any difference between the monster who'd razed his town, killed his friends and family, shattered so much of his world, and the face it had worn while doing so? What distinction could ever possibly matter, after all of that? And who would have the audacity to ask for it to matter?

Certainly not Sephiroth. Everything Jenova has done - at least in living memory; he's not arrogant enough to take any credit for what it had done to the Cetra, ages before he'd ever been born - has been done through him. Was, to some extent, made possible through him, as a direct result of his mind fracturing and giving it the opportunity to seize control of a vessel that, knowingly or not, Hojo had lovingly crafted to be its perfect weapon. If he'd been able to resist his mental breakdown, if he had never existed, if he hadn't been as powerful as he is, if he wasn't what he is...so many people would still be alive. So much would have never happened. That much is simply fact. Whether he, personally, wanted or intended for any of the horrors of Nibelheim and beyond...how much did that really matter? Especially to his victims? What right does he have to defend himself?

There is a moment, as he sees Cloud charging at him with the Buster Sword at the ready, that Sephiroth considers simply letting him do whatever he will. To let Cloud finally kill his demon. To, perhaps, finally die. Maybe in this world, with his abilities so muted, it could actually be possible. He turns to look, and the thought is right there.

But...the Buster Sword. It's there, too. And it hasn't always been Cloud's hands who have held it.

Angeal. Angeal's sword, that he almost never used. That he only ever used to defend, in extreme circumstances. A sword he would never want to rust with Sephiroth's blood.

Angeal is here, who loves him. Angeal, a man eaten alive by guilt of his own, who's nonetheless been pushing himself to forgive and accept himself - if not for his own sake, then for the people who love him still. Angeal...wants him alive, still. Needs him alive, to remind Angeal why he should keep living, too.

Cloud may deserve for Sephiroth to die...but Angeal deserves for Sephiroth to live. And Genesis, and Lazard, and so many others; can Sephiroth justify hurting them with his death to satisfy one victim of his?

And, ultimately, Sephiroth knows...that his death won't truly satisfy Cloud, anyway. Jenova won't die with him. And even if it did - it will simply leave Cloud empty. If Sephiroth knows anything, it's that the death of a monster doesn't actually bring catharsis. Hojo had died, and Hollander, and so many of the executives at ShinRa who had conceived and permitted of everything done to Sephiroth and so many others, and...none of it had truly mattered. None of it had undone anything that happened, or made it better. Hell, in Hojo's case, it hadn't even fully stopped his crimes.

Monsters never truly die. They live on in their deeds and their damage. Killing the bodies is so often an empty gesture. No doubt Cloud would disagree, but even with everything Sephiroth has done to him, everything Sephiroth could owe him in the form of recompense...maybe that's still not a matter for Cloud to decide.

And so, after that first moment...Sephiroth materializes Masamune, and turns to face him. It's never felt so heavy in his hand before, but even weakened, he's still essentially a perfect physical specimen, and between that and muscle memory he's able to bring it up to block Buster's swing.

And, if Cloud keeps swinging...he'll find blocking is all Sephiroth is doing. There are no words, and no attacks. Just Sephiroth, weathering the storm of Cloud's rage purely defensively.

[personal profile] relativefugue 2024-09-23 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Fight back. Why the hell won't this monster fight back?! This, to Cloud, feels like a cat toying with a future meal. He knows damn well what Sephiroth is capable of, down to the feeling of Masamune skewering through his chest- the scar is a constant reminder. *This* is not him. Not the man who invades his peace at every moment, who glides into his dreams and warps them into nightmares with that wicked, cruel smile.

"Don't toy with me!!! Stop holding back!"

Every single swing drains Cloud's physical energy more and more, leaving him to run solely on adrenaline and rage. He can feel his head beginning to pound and hurt and notices the corners of his vision taking on a sickly bright hue, a sure sign of another of his strange episodes coming on. Though the pull towards Sephiroth he has come to recognize is present, it is somewhat muted now, compared to the last few run-ins he had with the fallen SOLDIER. Despite these obstacles, and despite being drained of his superhuman strength, Cloud does manage to get a few more swipes in before his arms give out and his mind finally takes him to his knees.

Cloud's sides heave with desperate, exhausted breaths as he sinks to the ground, a snarl of equal parts fear and rage coming between gritted teeth. The Buster Sword clatters onto the cobbled path beside his struggling figure. So this is it. Sent to some podunk place, just to be drained of his abilities and fed right to the man who has singlehandedly destroyed everything he held dear. Will he kill him? Steal him away to use him as part of a master plan?

There was so much Cloud had left to do. People, companions he cared about, despite all efforts to claim otherwise. A Planet that needed help. So many questions unanswered. He keeps his head held up. If he is going to die, he will make sure it is not as a coward, but with defiance. That he will go down fighting to his last.

Sephiroth...isn't sure what to do.

Prevent Cloud from killing him, certainly. He's come to that conclusion. But how to proceed other than that? He has no idea. He doesn't know what he can possibly say to Cloud. What he can do, to distinguish himself from Jenova to him. If he should even try to make the distinction to Cloud, or if it would be better for Cloud to just let him...hate Sephiroth simply, without complicating matters. Would understanding the reality of things, the nuance of it, actually do Cloud any good, or will it just hurt him further?

Sephiroth - or Jenova, using him - has taken so much from his victims. The way he understands it, the only possible recompense he can make is to do whatever he can that can make their lives marginally better, even if it can never begin to compete with how much worse he'd made them. But...it's not clear what would serve that purpose here.

He supposes, if nothing else...trying to establish he isn't a threat to Cloud here is a start. And there's no better place or moment to do that than when Cloud slumps to his knees before him, exhausted and helpless.

He takes a careful step back from him. "...I don't wish to fight you, Cloud." His voice is quiet, and completely without the undercurrent of smug mockery Cloud is no doubt accustomed to from Jenova. And, to further emphasize his point, Masamune simply...disappears from Sephiroth's hand, leaving him unarmed.

[personal profile] relativefugue 2024-09-23 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Cloud watches Sephiroth prepare to move, and braces, his vision swimming more and more, the sharp pain and ringing that follows when his memories fail to work growing in intensity. One hand grabs at his forehead, anything to make it stop.

It does not stop, of course. Flashbacks bleed into reality- the entire town around them is suddenly ablaze, then reduced to ash, then reappears as it presently is in the span of a few seconds. Sounds of Sephiroth's low voice urging him to embrace his hate, then talking about the JENOVA project, then his voice, broken and manic, speaking to JENOVA and calling it Mother. The line between reality, illusion, memory, past, present, and truth completely blur, and Cloud is set adrift and floundering.

Sephiroth is going to strike, inevitably. That's how it is going to work, right? Just like when he skewered him. Cloud prepares, uses every drop of will he has left to pull himself back to the apparent reality before him...

...And then the man steps back. He speaks in a voice that is hauntingly familiar, from a time that is near impossible for Cloud to recall fully without problems, but he recognizes it nonetheless. The voice of the Sephiroth he knew and fought alongside so many years before. Masamune is gone.

"What...What is this? A trick to lure me in? Do you think I'm an idiot? Your little toy?"

Cloud's voice is straining with pain, confusion, flat anger, but an undercurrent of something new. Uncertainty. Why would Sephiroth go with this angle, if he knows how scrambled his memories are in the first place? What the hell is the plan?
silver_soldier: (on your feet come with me)

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-23 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Does it matter what I think?" Sephiroth sincerely doubts it. At least, not to Cloud.

"If you think it's a trick, then don't believe me. But while I won't permit you to kill me...I won't fight you otherwise. You can judge that with your own eyes well enough."

He pauses. What now? Does he just... "I don't have anywhere else I can seemingly go outside of this town," he says, after a moment's pause. "The same as everyone else who seems to have been drawn here. But would you like me to go...elsewhere, at least?" As in, would Cloud prefer to have him out of sight. It doesn't feel exactly right to just walk away from Cloud like this, but certainly Cloud doesn't want him around, either, so...Sephiroth's instinct is simply to ask what he wants him to do.

That Cloud himself might not have the first idea is not something he's anticipating.

[personal profile] relativefugue 2024-09-23 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course it doesn't," Cloud snaps, finally managing to sit up properly. The next step is staggering to his feet. The first attempt, Cloud falls over. The second, he scrambles up gracelessly, swaying and using the Buster Sword as a support with the tip in the ground.

Indeed, he doesn't really know what to do now, or what he wants. Nor does he ever expect that kind of question from Sephiroth of all people. Perhaps the one he knew before in his past, yes, but not this one. On the one hand, as his head vaguely clears, all he can think is that yes, he wants Sephiroth gone. Away, out of sight and out of mind.

But then reasoning sets in. This is Sephiroth. Is he about to let Sephiroth wander around here unchecked?

But...He also hasn't attacked him. Caused him any mental pain or purposely provoked him. Yet. Definitely yet.

"And let you walk around here being a danger to people? You think I'm gonna let you do that? Just how far are you willing to take this whole act-nnngh." Again, that buzzing feel, a pull towards Sephiroth comes up, and his head throbs like it is being hit with a damned sledgehammer. It takes everything Cloud has in him to not collapse again.
silver_soldier: (angel of mercy how did you find me)

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-24 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
"I doubt I'm much more dangerous than you right now. Our abilities seem to be...severely stunted, here." That, at least, Cloud shouldn't need to take Sephiroth's word for; he must be feeling it himself. "As for tricking you, or endangering other people...I don't know what purpose it would serve here."

Another pause. "But being around me seems to be triggering...something in your head. Even if you wanted to follow me around, can you afford to?" He takes another step backwards, further away from Cloud. "For your own sake...you should get some distance from me."
relativefugue: (Default)

[personal profile] relativefugue 2024-09-24 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
For his sake?

For a second, it almost sounds like Sephiroth is concerned about him. Again, it rings true towards old memories that are difficult to delve into.

"How am I supposed to know your reasons? I still don't know any of yours for what you've been doing to me already. What makes this different?"

But there goes Sephiroth, stepping away. For his sake, apparently. Cloud shakes off the haze of scrambled memories, trying just to focus on the here and now. If this isn't a dream, and this is Sephiroth, choosing not to harm him...Or is him IN a dream, which has happened plenty before, at the very least he can attempt to get a few answers. Whatever he can, to take home with him.
silver_soldier: (it's all my fault now)

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-24 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
He hesitates. Debates, for a moment. Should he even try...? But Cloud asked, and while there's not much Sephiroth can give him, honesty is perhaps the bare minimum.

"Jenova." He says it simply. "I...or whatever's left of me...have been doing what Jenova wants, ever since that day in Nibelheim. I am...whatever part of Sephiroth that Jenova is not. I don't want the same things. I never have."
relativefugue: (Default)

[personal profile] relativefugue 2024-09-24 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
What Sephiroth tells him doesn't ring as trickery, or the words of a hungry tiger circling a meal. They sound...Startlingly genuine. Too good to be true, even.

"But I saw you. I was with you, over in Nifelheim. When you locked yourself in that basement and lost your damn mind. That was you still. Wasn't what you wanted to see your mother, or whatever it was you kept telling me? What the hell happened then? When you died?!"
silver_soldier: (pray myself we don't forget)

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-24 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sephiroth knows no good will come from telling Cloud that it was Zack who was with him in the basement, Zack who came to find him. That Cloud was there, technically, but with very minimal contact with Sephiroth of any kind until the actual reactor, and that Sephiroth had never seen Cloud in the Nibel manor whatsoever. It will at best only confuse Cloud further, and at worst he'll just assume it's lies.

Besides, ultimately, the little details aren't important to the big picture.

"Jenova is...a virus. An intelligent hivemind of a virus. The ShinRa experiment that created me, made me as powerful as I am...I was injected with Jenova before I was even born. Much of my abilities come from it, not from any innate power or talent of my own." His gaze slides away from Cloud. "When my mind broke...the virus that had always been a dormant part of me took over. There wasn't enough left of me that was whole to oppose it. I still looked like myself, the way an ant riddled with parasites may still look like an ant...but that was where the similarities ended. And once Jenova had control...it took the vessel Hojo had created for it, and it did what a virus is meant to do. Spread itself to others...and kill anything extraneous to its natural imperatives."

He meets Cloud's gaze. "In the reactor, where 'I' spoke of seeing my mother...all I was then was a viral outpost, reuniting with the source of the virus hivemind. I, as a person...I had a human mother. But the Jenova in me...seeing the creature in the tank, to it, must indeed have been like a child finally reuniting with its mother. A scout, returning to home base."

He closes his eyes. "And you know that, in a sense, I never died. Jenova again. The part of me that was human died, but a virus like Jenova isn't so easily destroyed. It persists still, in the Lifestream, in Hojo's experiments with its cells. Wherever it can. And it will likely continue to use my form as its chosen face, until it finds another it prefers more." His eyes bore into Cloud. "Who do you think the body in that tank was, if not Jenova's host before me? Who did she used to be, thousands of years ago? How much does it matter now? All she is now, all anyone knows her as now, is Jenova. Perhaps that was her name once, and now...all her name means is the virus that destroyed her." His voice falls a bit quieter. "Such will be my fate as well."

For so many, 'Sephiroth' is synonymous with the deeds of Jenova. The distinction may matter to a few individuals, but to history...Sephiroth is the virus. The plague on humanity. The calamity from the skies. His legacy, forever.

After so much bullshit, one can eventually only go:

Yeah, sure, why not.

The dragon dream? Sure. Suddenly falling when he was back home last he checked? Sure.

Sephiroth being his cushion?

Well, at least something is familiar, even if it's not in this way.

Angeal hits him with a hard grunt, feeling it hard in his gut in a way that's just a little bit new. Immediately, he thinks he gains something of a headache, contrasting knowledge and experiences already rolling into him. "Damn - Seph. Hey." Pushing himself up so that they both have room to breathe, Angeal squeezes his eyes shut.

It's almost like breathing in the simulation. Muffled. But when he considers everything else-

"....We're in a real world."
silver_soldier: (has fallen apart now)

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-23 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Sephiroth pauses, considering this. Yes...now that Angeal draws his attention to it, it's obvious. They'd occasionally ended up in other worlds where they were truly alive, when they'd left the simulation...and this does feel like that.

But different, somehow, as well. Everything feels...less. (Well, except the ache in his midsection where Angeal landed on him. That is more.)

"We are," he agrees, after a moment. "But...why with no warning? And where are we?"

A beat. And then, with considerably more concern - "Where is Genesis?"
firsteditionbfs: (Don't test me or i'll start going)

[personal profile] firsteditionbfs 2024-09-23 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Who knows why." Sometimes, there were barely any warnings back in the simulation as well. Just things they had to deal with on their own, because they sure weren't going to get real assistance from the alleged gods or creators or whatever they wanted to call themselves.

It's something that can be figured out later. Because Sephiroth has a good point: they're missing more than a couple of people from this sudden bit of bullshit, and someone especially important.

Angeal does what he's often done during missions, which is take a breath and find his center. There's no point in panicking.

"I can't smell him in the immediate area... but my sense of smell feels off as well in a way that's different from both the simulation and the worlds we used to visit back then. I don't hear him either." And it's Genesis. He never stops to be loud. "There's a chance... he hasn't arrived in this place yet."

Yet.
silver_soldier: (all I wanted to do)

"Yet," Sephiroth echoes, hanging on to that word for dear life. But then...that's what he and Genesis had done, when Angeal was the late arrival. Declared he was simply late, because surely he would show up eventually.

And, to be fair, he had.

But the thought of life without Genesis - even life temporarily without Genesis - feels even duller than his senses are right now. As hollow and cold as a tomb.

"Perhaps he's here already, and he's simply moved elsewhere?" Sephiroth's gaze slides across their surroundings, landing on the sign that says TOWN. That Genesis is here and simply waiting for them to find him is an even more palatable idea that he will show up, at some unknowable time, and simply hasn't yet.
firsteditionbfs: (So apparently the "bad vibes" I've)

[personal profile] firsteditionbfs 2024-09-23 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Possibly..." Angeal pauses to shake his head slightly. No, that's the pessimist in him crawling out again. He can't let himself trip back into dark thoughts. Especially not when Sephiroth is right here, relying on him. "There's only one way to find out, and it's better for us to get all we can anyway before we find him."

Right. That's what they'll do. As long as they're doing something.

So pushing himself up onto his feet, Angeal glances around their surroundings. "I have to say, Town isn't a particularly descriptive name... It feels like a placeholder in a story."
silver_soldier: (angel of mercy how did you move me)

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-23 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"That, or we're in so rural a place that the locals here all know there can only be one town the sign is referring to..." Sephiroth shoots Angeal a sidelong look as he rises to his feet as well. He doesn't say anything, but there's a sense that he is looking to Angeal's country boy expertise here.
firsteditionbfs: (You know what? fuck it)

[personal profile] firsteditionbfs 2024-09-23 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Angeal scoffs, even as he patiently waits for Sephiroth to be ready before setting off in the direction of the only bit of civilization around... if they're not being lied to, anyway.

"For your information, Banora was so rural that we assumed if you had made it all the way out to an island in the middle of the ocean, you damn well knew its name ahead of time." It's just a little bit harder, after all, to accidentally stumble out to a place like that. "But it's a possibility. Still, you'd think there would be just a little more pride in the town's name in that case..."

Tucking his hands into his pockets, Angeal considers things. "Once you get a certain amount of ways from the larger pockets of civilization, that does tend to happen, honestly. 'We survived out here in this little place, don't you forget it'."
silver_soldier: (it's better than somewhere)

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-23 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"I will take your word for it." It's not like Sephiroth has experience with these things. He falls into step with Angeal easily, years of walking beside him making their strides match without either of them even having to think about it. "I do know one of the smaller towns I've been to...they almost seemed to be daring the landscape to kill them."

Listen, Nibelheim, he's just saying that nobody could be that bad at building bridges in the mountains on accident.
firsteditionbfs: (Oh so you're going to wear a black)

[personal profile] firsteditionbfs 2024-09-23 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, that sounds about right," Angeal agrees easily enough. "When you don't have a whole lot to tart with, some of the little thing end up mattering a lot. Even when they're really petty and nonsensical."

Like whatever the hell is going on with Nibelheim bridges.

....It's going to be a walk to this town. Even with decent strides and plenty of energy. Angeal rubs his fingertips together, just takes in the simple experience of feeling. There's an ache in him that's getting harder to ignore as time passes by, where his body collided with Sephiroth.

"...Recall anything, before we ended up here?"
silver_soldier: (it's all my fault now)

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-23 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sephiroth shakes his head. "Nothing unusual...nothing that gave any indication things would suddenly change." On some level, he's hoping that this is temporary, and they'll soon return to the simulation. Not because he prefers the simulation to a real world where they're truly alive like this, but...simply because they had an established life there. A beautiful villa, decorated the way they wanted. Genesis' dumbapple orchard. Zack, and Nanaki, and Mithrun, all coming and going. Angeal's bakery. The cookbook Sephiroth had been patiently working through. The VR training room. Sephiroth's cat Des, and their DTFs. And, perhaps more than anything else...a sense of security that had settled in over time, that perhaps they'd found a lasting peace. Somewhere they could simply live together, happily, for the rest of their days.

But...this doesn't feel temporary. It doesn't feel right. The strange, muted way everything about Sephiroth feels...he's never felt this before. It feels like parts of him have gone partially to sleep, but across his entire body.

"Do you remember anything?"
firsteditionbfs: (If you all have a crush on the same)

[personal profile] firsteditionbfs 2024-09-23 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
So nothing strange on his end either. Well, that's not ideal, but SOLDIER is at least often meant to handle things which aren't "ideal". They'll figure it out. Work through it. What else are they supposed to do?

"No - things seemed well enough from what I could see of the hub from Annie's Bakes." He frowns. "I think I must have started to nod off, however... Weird dream." Or was that a dream?

It's hard for him to figure out, at least immediately. The muted sensations of the simulation, clashing with the strange feelings in the dream... Make it maybe not a dream Potentially. Angeal doesn't think he has enough information to say anything about it yet.

"Then I fell onto you."
silver_soldier: (a tragedy I fear)

[personal profile] silver_soldier 2024-09-23 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
A weird dream... "Did it involve a dragon, by any chance?" It's probably a shot in the dark, but, well, they've got a lot of time and they may as well compare notes, even over seemingly trivial things like this.

He's quiet for a moment. "Angeal...have you been feeling differently, since we arrived?"
