Arrival

Broken Palace by Jonathan Eng

During 2014 Jonathan Eng composed the soundtrack for interactive narrative experience The Sailor’s Dream, consisting of a mix of instrumental tracks and a seven-part musical story told in folk song-form.
Like all who come through summoning circle, your arrival is heralded by a dream. Waking up is a dizzying, disorienting thing... and possibly made worse by the fact that you aren't alone.
Right after you appear, so does someone else. If you're lucky*, they'll simply blink into existence by your side. If you're not, there's a chance they spawned below or above you. That's one way to make a memorable first impression. Best untangle yourselves and get things figured out.
If you're extremely unlucky*, instead of another person being brought through the summoning circle, it's a monster. The creature bobs, laughs maniacally, and immediately begins to spit flames your way.
Some welcome this is. If you aren't the fighting type, hopefully someone nearby is. Eventually, one of the local Town guards will slay the monster before it - and you - cause too much trouble or fire damage.

Town Tricks

After your unexpected introduction to either your fellow offworlder or monster, you'll be given a proper one from Charlie in Town. He sends you on your way shortly after to get settled in properly and deal with then next offworlder that walks in. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a revolving door right now so he doesn't have time for a more in-depth explanation or to answer too many questions.
Nor does he remember to warn you about The Fae.
Although native to Talahee Forest, which is currently off-limits to offworlders, the surge of magic from the summoning circle has piqued their interest. While the faefolk vary wildly in appearance, the ones scouting are pixies.
These tiny tricksters may be too shy to reveal themselves outright... but that won't stop them from playing pranks on all these fun, new victims. Some examples of what can happen are:
Thankfully, these Fae mean you no harm. In fact, if you react with hostility they will give you a wide berth and simply find someone more fun to play with.

- ⁂ Your shoestrings are suddenly tied together and make you trip.
⁂ An object you had on your person goes missing... only to be found in an odd place. Repeatedly.
⁂ Create illusions of food and drink that disappear or turn into something else as soon as you try to consume it.
⁂ At night, they'll use dancing lights to lead people astray and turn them around Town.
Thankfully, these Fae mean you no harm. In fact, if you react with hostility they will give you a wide berth and simply find someone more fun to play with.
Rocky Talky

One of the things that was given to you in your welcome pack from Charlie was a summoning-stone. Although it looks like, well, an ordinary stone- It's actually magic! You can look through it and see someone else's face too if you're both viewing your stones at the same time. It can also record your speech and deliver that to someone else in a snap.
One of the other features is that you can scrawl on it. It will turn your writing into legible text that you can send others to read on their stones. Of course, you need to attune yourself to your stone first. To that end, it prompts a small questionnaire:
The last couple of questions might seem... strange but, surely, it must have a reason for asking. Once you answer the questions and unlock your device, you might pocket it and forget. Unfortunately, your scrawled answers were sent to the entire summoning-stone network throughout Town. Everyone can see what you put and they might even have some thoughts about it.

And he gestures at just the whole... thing of it, the village, the two of them talking, theentire deal.
"-apparently can happen more than once? In another place-" A computer simulation run by some people with very questionable ideas, but he doesn't say any of that. "-I met a nice young woman who ran a bar, and then a friend of a friend. Me and my husband grew real attached to Red, when he showed up."
....to put it lightly.
"Believable enough for you?"
no subject
Which is seriously not much whatsoever. Cloud's brow knits as he stares intently at Angeal, focus in those glowing blues. Tifa...Aerith... And Red? Angeal has a husband? They got attached to Red?
Well, look at him, making friends. Attached means that, right? Has to. Good on Red.
Cloud's voice grows a bit softer. "...You took good care of them, right?"
no subject
"Of course I did. With the people I care about, how could I do anything less?"
He lets that hang in the air a moment, filling the space with a kind weight, before he speaks up again, a little more casual and matter-of-fact. "Anyway, with people like that, do you think I had a choice? Think straight for once. I told you they can take care of themselves, and they wouldn't let someone like me change that anytime soon."
no subject
He cannot help but roll his eyes at the command to think straight- the hell is that about? He's thinking just fine, thank you very much, Angeal.
Really. He swears he is.
"You really wanna campaign for me to just settle in here, huh." This is Cloud's way of conceding that yes, perhaps he feels a touch less nervous about his friends now. Angeal isn't wrong- every single one of them can hold their own, no less in a group with one another. "Next you're going to give me some canned friendship speech or something. Save that one."
no subject
A smirk. "Which is all the friendship you'll get for now."
Yeah, no hiding behind that fake ass cool guy persona, Cloud. Angeal has seen and heard too much.
"Anyway, going back to what you said before, you can't just play merc here and expect simple trades. If you really want to be efficient, if you're serious about wanting to get back as soon as possible... Then you're going to have to make some established bases. You make it sound as though you'll just clock in with work, get information, and that's all anything will be compromised of."
He raises a finger. "But what about food? What about establishing a house that will keep you sheltered properly? Because you're sure not going to get across time and space instantly. Those are just the tips of the iceberg, for all the million of little day-to-day things you have to consider, even if you just end up staying here a month."
no subject
"Thinking this through kinda hard for a basic stranger, huh?" Cloud says out of the side of his mouth, shrugging. "There's food in the town I can work for. Housing available-" Really, he just needs a bed to crash in. No frills, just that is enough for him, he thinks. Or will insist, awkward as he is. "With that sorted already, I see no other problems but putting in the real work. Day-to-day will figure itself out as I go and get a lay of things. I travel enough to know that."
Is he really arguing his case with this smartass?
...Granted, Angeal does have a lot of good points. Kinds of things he would think through if he wasn't a fish out of water. Probably.
no subject
He lets his hands fan out casually to the side. "But by all means. Let me know how that works out for you."
Because while he's generally loathe to gamble - he's seen what it does to people's bank accounts just amongst his fellow SOLDIERs, let alone others - Angeal would put hard money on the fact that Cloud probably doesn't know baking, or butchery, or a whole lot of other things.
Which means more work towards getting other things besides information.
Not to mention so many other details.
no subject
As for skills- Farming, animal husbandry, and combat are about all he's got, if one can get him to admit the first two. Butchering, carpentry, baking, or even basic cooking are beyond him. Angeal has him nailed, and read for filth. In so many more ways than Cloud can comprehend just yet.
"Maybe if I get bored I'll start thinkin' on whatever other things you are babbling about. First, though, is scouting work." Did his twang slip a little again? Perhaps.
"Stuff I should get to, really."
He shrugs, and, without so much as looking at Angeal, starts to slink away. Awkward as ever.
