Arrival

Broken Palace by Jonathan Eng
0:07 / 1:13
▶︎
During 2014 Jonathan Eng composed the soundtrack for interactive narrative experience The Sailor’s Dream, consisting of a mix of instrumental tracks and a seven-part musical story told in folk song-form.
Like all who come through summoning circle, your arrival is heralded by a dream. Waking up is a dizzying, disorienting thing... and possibly made worse by the fact that you aren't alone.
Right after you appear, so does someone else. If you're lucky*, they'll simply blink into existence by your side. If you're not, there's a chance they spawned below or above you. That's one way to make a memorable first impression. Best untangle yourselves and get things figured out.
If you're extremely unlucky*, instead of another person being brought through the summoning circle, it's a monster. The creature bobs, laughs maniacally, and immediately begins to spit flames your way.
Some welcome this is. If you aren't the fighting type, hopefully someone nearby is. Eventually, one of the local Town guards will slay the monster before it - and you - cause too much trouble or fire damage.

Town Tricks

After your unexpected introduction to either your fellow offworlder or monster, you'll be given a proper one from Charlie in Town. He sends you on your way shortly after to get settled in properly and deal with then next offworlder that walks in. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a revolving door right now so he doesn't have time for a more in-depth explanation or to answer too many questions.
Nor does he remember to warn you about The Fae.
Although native to Talahee Forest, which is currently off-limits to offworlders, the surge of magic from the summoning circle has piqued their interest. While the faefolk vary wildly in appearance, the ones scouting are pixies.
These tiny tricksters may be too shy to reveal themselves outright... but that won't stop them from playing pranks on all these fun, new victims. Some examples of what can happen are:
Thankfully, these Fae mean you no harm. In fact, if you react with hostility they will give you a wide berth and simply find someone more fun to play with.

- ⁂ Your shoestrings are suddenly tied together and make you trip.
⁂ An object you had on your person goes missing... only to be found in an odd place. Repeatedly.
⁂ Create illusions of food and drink that disappear or turn into something else as soon as you try to consume it.
⁂ At night, they'll use dancing lights to lead people astray and turn them around Town.
Thankfully, these Fae mean you no harm. In fact, if you react with hostility they will give you a wide berth and simply find someone more fun to play with.

One of the things that was given to you in your welcome pack from Charlie was a summoning-stone. Although it looks like, well, an ordinary stone- It's actually magic! You can look through it and see someone else's face too if you're both viewing your stones at the same time. It can also record your speech and deliver that to someone else in a snap.
One of the other features is that you can scrawl on it. It will turn your writing into legible text that you can send others to read on their stones. Of course, you need to attune yourself to your stone first. To that end, it prompts a small questionnaire:
The last couple of questions might seem... strange but, surely, it must have a reason for asking. Once you answer the questions and unlock your device, you might pocket it and forget. Unfortunately, your scrawled answers were sent to the entire summoning-stone network throughout Town. Everyone can see what you put and they might even have some thoughts about it.

Obsidian Blackheart (WoL) | FFXIV | CRAU from Amani, post-DT
Some dimensional shifts are, evidently, different than others. Sometimes it's cold and distant, like the darkness curling into one's skin. Other times, it's full of memories.
Or it's like someone snapping their fingers.
Abruptly, Obsidian finds himself falling onto the ground, wincing at the sudden change. It's only then that he realizes right above him, a flaming skull is appearing as well.
Well, it's not the weirdest thing he's dealt with.
"All right, let's get this over with," Obsidian grumbles as he rolls onto his feet, hauling his greatsword from his back before he confidently engages the fiend in battle. You're welcome to watch, or maybe give a hand?
II. my fae-vorite
Dealing with fae and fae-adjacent isn't anything new, Obsidian just wishes he could've predicted it better because now he's missing his Ishgardian knight ring. Which he doesn't appreciate at all, by the by!
With his hands on his hips, Obsidian peers at the woods where the giggling fae await.
"Feo Uhl, most beauteous branch, your sapling needs your help!" Obsidian calls into the woods.
A lengthy pause.
No response.
"Well, 'twas worth a shot," he mutters.

Name: Obsidian Blackheart
Age: 32 I'm pretty sure
Race: Viera
Favorite soup? Why?: I can't pick a favorite. It's like asking me who my favorite friend is. I can't measure something like that. All soup is my favorite.
Is soup something you eat or drink? Depends if there are bits to chew or not. Some you chew, some you drink.
rocky talky
Soup really is an amazing thing, isn't it? I think I'm going to be making a lot of it in the immediate future, honestly.

oi
did Zack show up here too?
no subject
You'll let me know if he turns up, right?
II.
He glances off into the trees with an air of boredom, yet 'tis clear his words are meant for Obsidian specifically.
"Flattery will get you nowhere. Unless, of course, it's trouble that you seek."
no subject
A long ear swivels in the direction of Emet-Selch before the rest of him follows. There isn't a look of wariness or hesitation; instead, Obsidian's eyes light up and he looks... happy to see him.
"More troublesome to not try if past experience has taught me anything." There's a pause, then he hesitates as he tries to pick his next set of words carefully. "I don't suppose you recognize me? And I mean... me, not the color of my soul or however that works with your special eyes."
no subject
Emet-Selch folds his arms and regards him squarely for a long moment - and 'tis clear he's studying the man in front of him, not just the familiar essence that marks him as one whose soul has been multiple times rejoined and clearly of the Source. There's a darkness about this one - and to be plain, he'd not forget a bosom like that.
"Not you in particular, no." The words are blunt, yet honest. "But mayhap that in itself warrants an introduction...? After all, you already seem to know who I am."
arrival!
All he has is one measly dagger, but that doesn't mean he can't deliver on what he's offering. Conjured poison definitely helps, though this would probably go much faster if flaming skulls could bleed.
no subject
"Certainly not going to turn down the aid," he assures before addressing the Monster of the Day. "Over here! You're paying attention to me."
Launching himself across the field, Obsidian strikes the Flameskull at the front, knocking out a few teeth in the process. In response, the fiend opens its jaws and sprays out a stream of flames at Obsidian; a dark shield forms around him, protecting him for the majority of it and leaving him only slightly singed.
no subject
With an artful twist he manages to dislocate that side, at least for now. He retreats from close quarters soon after to shout a warning. A little prematurely, maybe, but he's always thought it's better to be prepared.
"Once this thing goes down, it won't stay that way. I hope you're as good at shaking attention as you are at holding it."
ii.
Yet, this isn't the Warrior of Light. At least, not as he remembers them. That's a difficult thing, admittedly, to wrap his head around still. He's been informed though since arriving that there are many realities out there and - perhaps similar to their own reflections - ones that might be just like his, but not quite. Including, apparently: This Warrior of Light is not the one that he remembers, no, but could be one all the same.
And in that case, he hopes they will friends all the same as well.
"A valiant effort," Aymeric speaks, pacing the forest's edge himself on a walk around Town. "Unfortunate that it didn't yield the results you were hoping for."
no subject
Distantly, it also breaks his heart a bit to know that he may never see Haurchefant again either, but... well, at least they did reunite for a time and made up for it. Obsidian can't be ungrateful for that.
Instead of launching himself into the world's more spinecrunching glomp (yeah I cringed too), Obsidian instead just nods. "Was worth a try," he answers. "Are you the only one from Ishgard here, I take it?"
no subject
"So seems to be the case so far," he confirms. "It does feel a bit strange without at least Lucia by my side, but I will manage." Even if she might chide him upon his return for not taking care of himself properly. Though, maybe with Obsidian - and others - here, he'll have those to keep him more mindful of such things.
"You're also the only Viera I've come across thus far, which seems all the more reason for us to hopefully work together to figure out these strange circumstances."
